Full Biography

Professional Background:
Prof Wondwossen Amogne Degu graduated first in 1990 with an MD from AAU, CHS, from where he obtained his speciality certificate in internal medicine in 1996 and subspecialty certificate in infectious diseases in 2012. He received a PhD degree in infectious diseases from Karolinska Institute in Sweden in 2015. In addition, he received several trainings in clinical research methods and grant writing.
He has been an academic staff member at the AAU since 1999. His main responsibilities are teaching, patient care and research. His most notable contribution is in the establishment and administration of the Infectious Disease fellowship program within the Department of Internal Medicine, CHS, AAU. Eleven graduated (6 adult infectious disease and 5 pediatric infectious disease specialists), and another four are completing their training. He authored and co-authored over 130 articles in peer-reviewed journals (three are randomized controlled clinical trials), 8 case reports/series and 10 more as research letters, viewpoints and editorials. He wrote a chapter in an international HIV textbook, and another is being processed. He presented 22 abstracts at national and international conferences.
He supervised the research work of 7 PhD candidates ( 4 completed), 14 MSc candidates (all completed), 12 MEPI scholars (9 completed) and 10 final year internal medicine residents (9 completed).
He received five different awards for the best scientific paper presentation and an outstanding research achievement award from CHS, AAU in 2025. He won as a principal investigator, NIH (USA) and NIHR (UK) research awards, and a thematic research award from the AAU.
He serves as an editorial board member for one national and three reputable international medical journals. His outstanding contributions in promoting HIV care and treatment, supporting the Addis Ababa region and the national programs, in addition to providing mentoring and supportive supervision, have been transformative. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was actively involved in patient care, research and mentoring of healthcare workers, as well as educating the public in different mass media. He has actively served in the national technical working group established by the Ministry of Health for controlling the Marburg virus disease outbreak.
He has been given Hon. Full professorship status in molecular and clinical medicine from the University of Dundee in Scotland in 2022 and is promoted to full professor in infectious disease by the Addis Ababa University senate in November 2025.
